Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of the skinny--a devotee, in fact, since years ago when I was living in London emulating local street style (read: anything Kate Moss wore). But to every thing there is a season, and this year the skinny was finally eclipsed by mom jeans and relaxed, full-length cuts.
Consider this ‘90’s throw-back an instant upgrade to your denim game: mom jeans (high-waist, typically cropped straight-leg jeans in raw denim brought to the forefront by Re/Done and its tribe of It Girl fans) are immensely cooler than your go-to skinny, immensely more flattering than a boyfriend cut. Feel free to crop them yourself with a pair of scissors (cutting about 2 inches above the ankle to ensure they pair well with mules, flats, sneakers, ankle boots, or stilettos—the key is to show a bit of ankle), and style with a cropped top (layered with a jacket or not) or slim shirting to balance the silhouette.
An alternative to all things cropped; relaxed, full-length denim a la Jane Birkin is totally groovy. More elegant than distressed stovepipes and more current than the aforementioned skinny, this style sits slightly lower on the hip with a straight or flared leg, and is typically cut in lightweight denim with a touch of stretch. In sum they’re cool, they’re comfortable, and they’re coming for you this Fall! To style: pair with a men’s button down or simple tee tucked in (you can afford more volume on top when it’s tucked with this style), a vintage belt, and platforms, block heels or boots for Fall.
1. Add one of these denim styles to your wardrobe and make yourself wear them. It's easy to put on the same old thing, so take time to plan outfits that work with these new(ish) styles for a few weeks. Soon it will be second nature to throw them on (looking fresh and fabulous)!
2. Know that new styles never mean abandoning things that work--keep those skinnies if you love them, just be sure to rotate in updated styles to keep things current.
